Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
If you have a Guardsman register or grille that’s clogged, corroded, or no longer seating properly, we stock Guardsman-compatible replacements and clean or swap them during a single visit. Most register and grille cleaning or replacement work in Fort Worth runs between $85 and $240, depending on how many units need attention and whether we’re cleaning, resealing, or replacing them outright. The typical call starts when a homeowner notices one room never seems to get the airflow it used to, or a register has visible grime that won’t wipe clean anymore.

We’re an independent service provider in Fort Worth, not affiliated with Guardsman, but we’ve worked with their registers and grilles in hundreds of homes around the city, from older ranch-style houses near the TCU campus to newer construction out in Wedgwood. What we’ve learned is that Guardsman registers fail in predictable ways, and most of the time the fix is straightforward once you know what you’re looking at.
Here’s what you need to know before you call, and what Paul Adeyemi, our owner, would tell you if he were standing in your hallway looking at the same register you’re looking at right now.
Which Guardsman Models This Applies To
Guardsman registers and grilles come in a few distinct lines, and the compatibility details matter more than most people expect. The most common in Fort Worth homes are the stamped-steel residential registers, typically in 4×10, 4×12, and 6×12 inch standard duct openings. Guardsman also makes a heavier extruded-aluminum grille line used more often in commercial spaces or high-traffic hallways, and those use a different frame depth that won’t swap directly with the stamped-steel models.
The quick way to identify what you have: flip the register over and look for a stamped code near the damper. Guardsman usually stamps a part number or at minimum a letter code indicating the series. If you can’t find a stamp, measure the outside frame dimensions to the nearest eighth of an inch. A 4×10 register measures roughly 5.75 x 11.75 inches at the outer frame edge, not at the duct opening. That measurement gap is the number one reason homeowners buy the wrong size online and end up calling us anyway.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Guardsman specifically: the original stamped-steel registers are fine, but the aftermarket equivalents from Hart & Cooley and Accord are often slightly heavier gauge steel and their damper mechanisms hold adjustment longer. We keep both OEM Guardsman replacements and quality aftermarket equivalents on the truck, and we’ll show you the difference before we install anything. If you prefer to stay with Guardsman original parts, we can order them and have them on site for a follow-up visit later that same week.
Compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Guardsman sidewall registers sit in a different frame depth than Guardsman floor registers. They look nearly identical in photos, but a sidewall register installed in a floor opening will not seat properly and will rock underfoot. We see this most often in Fort Worth homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s, where a previous owner or handyman swapped one style for the other because it was what the hardware store had in stock.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- Visible grime buildup that won’t wipe clean. Over years, dust mixed with cooking oils and pet dander bakes onto the register face, especially in Fort Worth’s hot summers when the AC runs constantly. Once it’s baked on, a damp rag won’t touch it, and scrubbing just scratches the finish.
- A damper that won’t hold its position. The little lever on the back of a Guardsman register controls airflow. When the friction mechanism wears out, the damper flops open or shut on its own. That’s a part replacement, not a cleaning issue.
- Rattling or buzzing when the system runs. A loose damper or a register frame that’s pulled away from the duct will vibrate audibly. This gets worse in older Fort Worth homes where the original ductwork has settled.
- Rust or corrosion on the fins. This is more common in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and any space with high humidity. Fort Worth’s humid spring and summer months accelerate it. A rusted register isn’t just ugly; the corrosion can flake off into the airstream.
- Uneven room temperatures that started recently. If one bedroom is suddenly warmer than it used to be, the register itself may be fully closed, blocked with debris, or the damper may have failed in the closed position. We find this on inspection calls more often than people expect.
None of these are emergencies, but they do get worse. A register that’s failing will continue to undercut your airflow, and in a Fort Worth August, that’s the difference between a room that stays comfortable and one that doesn’t.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a straightforward register or grille swap in Fort Worth, you’re looking at roughly $85 to $140 per register installed, including the part and labor. If you need multiple registers replaced in one visit, the per-unit cost drops because we’re already at the house with the tools out. A deep cleaning of existing registers, where we remove them, degrease and scrub them, clean the duct opening, and reinstall, typically runs $45 to $75 per register.
What drives the range: the size and series of the register, whether you want OEM Guardsman or an aftermarket equivalent, and whether the duct opening itself needs any cleaning while the register is off. We’ll show you the condition of the duct opening before we touch it.
Every quote includes the part, the labor, and a written price before we start. No per-vent add-ons, no surprise line items, no bait pricing. The price we quote is the price you pay.
Our work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a register we installed fails or doesn’t seat properly within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s not a warranty card in a drawer; it’s our standing policy on every job.

Register and grille work isn’t dangerous like garage door springs or electrical panels, so there are some things you can safely check and try yourself. You can remove a register by lifting it straight out of the opening, then vacuuming the visible duct opening and wiping the register frame with a degreasing cleaner. You can check that the damper lever moves freely. You can measure the frame dimensions before ordering anything online.
Where DIY goes sideways: buying the wrong size (the frame measurement vs duct opening measurement trap we mentioned above), buying a sidewall register for a floor opening, or installing a new register in a duct opening that has hidden damage to the sheet metal flange. We’ve also walked into homes where a homeowner stripped the screw holes in the duct flange trying to force a register that wasn’t the right fit, and by then the fix is more involved than the original replacement.
If any of this feels like guesswork, or you’d just rather have it done and know it’s right, call us at (682) 432-0424. We’ll come out, look at what you have, and give you a firm quote before anything comes off the wall.
FAQs
In our experience, a metal Guardsman register in a Fort Worth home lasts anywhere from 8 to 15 years before the finish dulls and the damper mechanism begins to loosen. Homes with pets, high humidity, or smokers tend to see the shorter end of that range. The stamped-steel models fail faster than the extruded-aluminum ones, but most residential units are stamped steel.
Sometimes, but not always. If the frame is intact and the problem is a sticky or loose damper, we can often clean and tighten the mechanism in place. If the frame is bent, rusted through, or the screw holes are stripped, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you the condition of the register we removed and explain what’s fixable before we quote anything.
Most homes with two to five registers involved are done in under an hour, including the time spent removing each register, cleaning the duct opening, and reinstalling. We bring everything we need on the truck, so there’s no running back to a supply house unless you specifically want an OEM Guardsman part we don’t currently stock.
We stock the most common Guardsman residential sizes and finishes on the truck, including 4×10, 4×12, and 6×12 in white, off-white, and brown. Less common sizes or specialty finishes can be ordered and installed later the same week. Call (682) 432-0424 and we’ll tell you straight away whether we have your size on hand.
